Kamakaokealohaʻāina is an ʻŌiwi owned and operated business dedicated to cultivating aloha ʻāina consciousness through the art of photography. Our intentions are not to make a profit, but rather to raise consciousness while raising funds to support aloha ʻāina-based initiatives throughout Hawaiʻi. We don't take pictures for the sake of just taking pretty pictures. Our photography is rooted in our mission to cultivate critical consciousness in our communities about the importance of aloha ʻāina in its many manifestations.
Our name, Ka maka o ke aloha ʻāina, reflects this mission. Our photography and artwork is presented from the perspective of the maka of poʻe aloha ʻāina: people who love, are loyal to, and are genealogically descended from our ʻāina kulāiwi, ko Hawaiʻi Paeʻāina.

Kamakaokealohaʻāina: Our Logo
Our logo draws upon some of the many meanings of the word "maka." Maka can mean "eye" or "camera lens," but it can also refer to the point of a sharp object, or a new shoot from a plant. The "maka" of the person who embodies the values of aloha ʻāina, is the lens through which we view and represent our world. This calls upon us as the "new shoots," or offspring of Hāloa (represented by the kalo leaf), to both cultivate our ʻāina (represented by the ʻōʻō on the outer rim), and fight to protect it (represented by the ihe, spear, on the inner rim). This is the aloha ʻāina consciousness that we seek to cultivate and grow in our ʻohana and our lāhui, today and for generations to come.
